Update on the Babe

Alright - so if you're not interested in babies, this blog has got to be dropping off your radar!  I've got another Silas update for you again!

Big day today...We had both a lactation consultant appointment and our 2 week well-child doctor appointment today.  Silas is 19 days old and is doing great!

He had dropped in weight from his birth weight of 6lb 15oz to a low of 6lb 6oz.  However, he is UP in weight now to 7lb 5 oz!  GOOD BOY!

We'd been slightly concerned about his weight because we weren't sure if he was getting enough to eat, and a slight case of newborn jaundice showed up a few days after we got home.  Other than lots and lots of blood work, Si was able to get the levels back low enough to avoid the bili-lights.  Additionally, we've been having some real challenges with nursing, but I have been able to keep exclusively to breast milk, other than a few CCs of formula when we were still in the hospital.  Apparently, near-term infants don't have the suck/swallow reflex fully developed, so they have a hard time nursing...and are super sleepy babies, which adds to the challenge.  Anyway, if you want more details, let me know!  Our lactation consultant thinks within a week or two (as Silas nears his actual due date), he'll be able to latch and stop being a "lazy" eater.  He must get that from his dad, because I certainly am not a lazy eater!    :)

He has also grown from 19.5" at birth to 20.75" as of today.  With large feet, our pediatrician says he'll be at least 6' tall when he's older.  Again, taking after his dad!

Si has been a wonderful baby to us so far.  He's starting to be more alert and staying awake more during the early evening.  We all fight over who gets to hold him and gaze into his beautiful eyes when he is awake.  The dogs seem to be both mystified and in love with their new brother.  Ollie is especially attentive and if the baby makes even the smallest noise during the night, Ollie will check on him and watch him for a few minutes until he settles down.  Very sweet.  Nell is a little more oblivious, but will give Si a little lick on the head when he's at her level - primarily when he's nursing!

Both Jonathan's parents and my dad have met Si and I will post a few photos of their time together soon!
