March Right In!

Wowsers - it's already March!?!?! Time is moving so quickly!

So what's new?

Picking up from the last post, we did end up giving Silas formula for 2 days. The first day did seem to help with the spitting up. Then we did 2 days of switching off between formula and milk. And now we're back to 100% milk. Overall, I think the experiment mostly confirmed that Si probably is a bit colicky, and maybe a bit of reflux, but not sick/allergic/etc.

However, the doctor thought that he was still looking a bit yellow. He said that in a pre-term baby, the jaundice should be gone by 3-4 weeks. Considering we were at 6.5 weeks, he had us get some blood work done. The bilirubin levels were higher than they should be for his age, so tomorrow we will get more blood work done to determine whether he just has prolonged jaundice, or if there is an enzyme deficiency in his liver. I am really not looking forward to the lab tomorrow because rather than a little heel-poke to collect the blood, they are going to have to take it from the top of his hand to get a larger amount of blood. It is going to break my heart to hear his little screams of pain! Our follow-up appointment with the doctor is Wednesday morning, when we will learn the results of the tests. Even if it's not just breast milk jaundice, the doc said the alternatives really aren't that bad...simply good to know about for the future.

In other news, I have experienced a new-parent rite of passage recently. THE FIRST MAJOR BLOW OUT! Oh yes, after we started the formula, my baby let loose in his diaper during a feeding. I will spare you a photo of this experience, but perhaps I can create a mental picture in your mind. Simply imagine 36 hour's worth of "dijon mustard" exploding all over your lap. It was so gross, I could only laugh! (and then promptly take a shower!)

Last week was Jonathan's first full week back to work. We're still working on getting a vehicle for me, so I was trapped in the house all week. Luckily, Rachelle rescued me from round-the-clock nursing, rocking, diaper-changing, cooing, etc. on Saturday. We went to some craft stores, antique stores and out to lunch. It's easy to lose perspective when you're trapped in the house day after day. I felt like I regained my sanity and felt more like myself when I returned home. Good lesson to learn. Happily, Jonathan is a more-than-competent dad and loves being on baby duty!

I'm sure there is more interesting things going on in our lives these days...but it's getting late and I'm getting tired! However, I realized I had neglected the dear-old-blog, so wanted to pop in!
