December 2011 Update

Hello! It's nearly 10pm and Jonathan and Silas are snuggled up in bed together, so I thought I'd take this peaceful moment to catch up on a little blogging!

Jonathan had his last class meeting of his first grad school course last night. I know we're both relieved that it's over before baby is born! The past 11 weeks were pretty tough to add the grad school course and time expectations into our schedule...but we made it work and Jonathan's final most recent paper got a perfect score - one we never thought the teacher would actually give. While he hasn't received his final grade yet, he's thrilled with the amount he learned and progressed just in the first quarter of the program! Of course, I'm super proud too!

I'm nearly 39 weeks along now - only 8 more days until the due date! I'm thinking (or maybe hoping?) that this little one is born this weekend...while I wouldn't mind one more week of getting the house prepped, washing baby clothes, etc., I'm not sure I want another week of the aches & pains that accompany the end of pregnancy. Sleep has been tough - I'm up basically once an hour throughout the night, lots of tossing and turning. And my ankles, feet and legs - the swelling is insane and super painful.

At the same time, every sweet moment I get just with Silas, or just Jonathan, Silas and me, I'm really thankful for and I try to soak it in. I'm not sure in which exact ways our family dynamic is going to change - but obviously it is going to change drastically. And things are so good now, I think I worry about what that change is going to bring to our lives. Clearly our sleep schedule will get turned upside-down, but also the way I interact with Silas will have to change...he's used to having me all to himself and it's going to be a hard adjustment for both of us to have to split the attention.

Silas is super excited for this baby to arrive (or so he thinks). We have a book called "Waiting for Baby" that he's been wanting to read multiple times per night. The little boy in the book (Max - but we substitute Silas's name) has reddish hair...and a few nights ago Silas informed me that when our baby is born, he will also have "orange hair." He still likes to give pats and kisses to my belly when I ask and loves to say "Hi baby! I'm your brother Silas." I wonder if the little one will recognize his voice at all. I know they say newborns only know their mother's voice at birth, but with the amount of noise Silas, Ollie and Nell make, I have to think this baby should also recognize their noises!!!

I'm still working full-time, but admit I'm getting short-timer's syndrome! I've wrapped up nearly all the projects I committed to and it feels good to be leaving very minimal work to my team while I'm on leave. Each day I leave the office I think to myself - I wonder if I'm going to be back in the morning or not!?!? So far, I've been back each day...

So - we shall see what comes next. Anyone want to make a guess of when the baby will arrive? Are you thinking boy or girl? (And just a little clue, as of yesterday morning, I was dilated 3cm and 70% effaced, so I think a sooner-than-later guess may win!)
