On Saturday I accomplished what is likely one of my greatest physical feats...which isn't saying much, but still really exciting for me. Jennifer (Cheddarwick) and I (Queso Katie) formed Team Nacho Cheese for the St Leo Food Connection's 7th Annual Wheels to Meals fundraiser bike ride. We rode 20 MILES throughout the Puyallup Valley together and with the first-time rider's match, we raised $710 to go toward food service programs for our community members in need.
In our matching team shirts (which prompted multiple inquiries of whether we were twins), we pedaled along...and only stopped once to walk up a long hill. I should mention that I haven't ridden my bike in roughly 7 years. When we reached the first rest stop, Jennifer told me that we were halfway done...and I have to admit, my heart sank a little to know that we still had an equal amount left to go. Around mile 11 or 12, my legs started hurting a bit and I was questioning myself if I was going to be able to make it to the end. Of course, there really wasn't any option other than to get to the end, so I just kept on pedaling. The last half mile or so was a bit brutal and I just wanted to be done - and as we crested the final hill to the finish line, it took all my strength to keep pedaling and ride to the bitter end!
I'm really proud that we achieved our goal, and even prouder to have done so in benefit of our community. I volunteer regularly at St Leo's Food Bank in a Backpack program. Through this program, Tacoma-area kids who face hunger over the weekends receive a backpack with 6 meals to take home each weekend, to help ensure they have food to eat when not in school.
When we got home (and after a shower and a much-deserved & neede nap), Silas was wanting in on the biking action. So while Jonathan studied, I loaded Asa in his stroller and took Silas out on his bike...We went home after 50 minutes, but that kid could have bikedc all night!
I'd like to think I'll keep on pedaling throughout the year...and perhaps next year go for the 32 mile route!!! :)
