Today was also the last day with the rental car that we've had since the car accident on January 4. This is bad news for me, because my car was totaled and I have not replaced it. Jonathan's car is finally out of the body shop...but it's a manual and I don't know how to drive it. I don't have the energy to shop for a vehicle, but know that I must. Being stuck at home with no transportation will just not be cool at all.
Today I had my 6 week post-partum doctor's appointment. Everything is the way it should be!
Today, I finally called the doctor to ask, "Why is Silas crying at every moment that he's not being held? Why is he spitting up 4-5 times after every feeding? Is this normal baby behavior, or is something wrong?" The pediatrician's office is amazing and is so good at not making a new parent feel bad for calling to ask why her newborn is crying and spitting up! I got an appointment a few hours later and saw the doc.
We ruled out any obvious sickness. Silas is not just crying, but WAILING any time we are not physically holding him in our arms. We can't put him in the car seat to run errands without WAILING. We can't put him down for a few minutes to take a shower without WAILING. We can't even put him in his bed to sleep without WAILING. And it just doesn't stop. The second he is in our arms, pure silence. He has been sleeping on our chests at night because he won't sleep without being in our arms.
Doctor's thoughts are that he is just the type of baby that needs to be held and soothed all the time. And that's fine with me, but I'm going to have to start using a baby carrier, because my arms are tired and the house is a disaster!
Doctor also wants me to formula feed him for the next two days to see if maybe it's something in my milk/diet that is upsetting him. I really don't want to do that, because I've been working my arse off to get him to breastfeed well. We are just now getting to the point where things are working fairly well - at least on the left side! I hate to break the progress with two days of formula/bottles. I have been convinced that "THOU SHALT EXCLUSIVELY BREAST FEED" is the 11th Commandment! I hate to break the commandment, but I think that I will try it. Doctor gave me a free container of formula...which Ollie proceeded to eat while we were out returning the rental car...So we'll have to try to start that strategy tomorrow instead. Ollie also pulled out all my pump pieces and destroyed a few of them. I think jealousy is starting to kick in...yikes.
The other thing the doctor thinks might be making Si so irritable, is that he has been gaining 1.5 ounces per day; the average is 0.5-1.0 ounce per day. So this larger, constant growth may be hard on him. Tomorrow, Silas will be 6 weeks old and he weighs 9 pounds, 3 ounces. Getting big!
And now, for the cuteness!
Silas Waves Hello!
Peeking out from his hooded bath towel. Don't you just want to kiss those little lips!?!? That's what I do all day, every day as I hold him!

I am bummed to hear about the wailing! I'm so glad you have a good doctor, who listens to you and doesn't poo-poo what's going on with poor Si. I personally don't think you need to be all that worried about the breastfeeding thing. I know loads of people whose moms couldn't or wouldn't breastfeed, and they are totally healthy. So if it doesn't work, so what?? You are still the best Mom Si could hope for.
I do have a possible solution to the vehicle dilemma. Ready? Bum. Bum. Bum. Baah bummm! Internet department!! This is where Donnie worked when we first lived in Seattle (for a jerky dealership, but whatever, he is now a car buying expert). It is the coolest. You spec out exactly what you want, what you want to pay (the exact price is hard to pin point, so you can just say, "I want it for $250 over invoice". Donnie says this is a very fair deal, and he usually gets our vehicles for this price. Even if they say the best they can do is $500 over, it's still a great deal, because it takes off $3000 off the sticker price), and your credit score if you know it, and what you want to put down. Don't bring up a trade in until after you've agreed to a price (says dealership Donnie). You send out the info to various dealerships, and voila! THEY contact YOU, you get what you want, and there is no real heckling involved. And this is the longest comment ever!
OMG Katie!!He just keeps getting cuter and cuter, doesn't he? <3 I haven't seen you in like a million years and now I feel guilty that I want to visit all of a sudden. lol
One of my friends recently went through a similar crying/ spitting up problem. It turned out he was allergic to breast milk, as well as a bunch of formulas. They ended up having to by some crazy formula that was like $20 an ounce or something absurd like that. It solved the problem, but I hope that's not the problem here!!
