34 Down, 6 To Go!

I'm writing this post ahead of time, to make sure it gets posted on Wednesday! It's so busy around the house, that I'm not convinced that I'll be able to get back to the blog in between. So just in case you're closely following Grovie's weekly development...Be forewarned, there is talk of fur and cream-cheese coated babies below...

- Grovie kind of looks like s/he's coated in a layer of cream cheese these days. The thick, white substance that protects his/her skin from pruning in the amniotic fluid is called vernix. (Ummm...these are the parts of child-development and -birth that I choose to ignore.)

- The soft fur, lanugo, that covered Grovie's body for much of his/her stay in the womb is now almost completely gone.

- Grovie begins to develop his/her own immune system, instead of relying solely on antibodies received through the placenta. This will come in handy when some grubby relative manhandles the baby without washing his hands first.

- This week, Grovie measures about 17¾ inches, and weighs almost 5 pounds.

To add to the grossies, I had a chiropractor advise me that I should NOT allow the nursing staff to wash the vernix off of Gracelyn right after birth. Instead, he said I should paw my little princess, collect the vernix, and use it as a skin moisturizer. Yup, never saw him again.

wow, bri, I'm throwing up right now....
I love all your posts, Katie! What an amazing nursery. How'd you come up with that? It's made me feel so good to think of you being surrounded by family so much of the time recently. Only a few weeks left and then life will get mobile again!
